The Nature of Grief

A lot of people don’t think they’ve experienced grief. It makes sense why. We’ve been taught that grief is caused by death, usually death of someone you loved and cared for.

Even if they’ve experienced painful breakups, devastating childhood trauma, miscarriages, pet loss, or anything else on the list of 40+ losses people go through, they don’t think that they’ve experienced grief because it doesn’t fit the mainstream definintion that grief is only caused by the death of a loved one.

Other people know they’ve grieved a major loss, but since it happened a long time ago that there’s no point in dealing with it.

Then there are others who don’t think their losses are as important because they’ve heard stories about people who have been through more dramatic or intense experiences.

Then there are those who simply want to help other people heal from their pain, but don’t understand why they have to use The Grief Recovery Method for themselves. Wanting to help others is a noble cause. At the same time, we think it’s crucial that any who wants to do The Grief Recovery Method Certification Training do the same grief work they are going to walk others through.

There’s one major exercise we do in The Grief Recovery Method called The Loss History Graph. After learning about the 40+ life events that can cause grief, participants chart the various losses they've experienced.

It’s powerful because a light bulb goes off and people have a profound new awareness about how many experiences have been limiting their lives.

In Cole’s first Certification training there was a woman who didn’t think she had experienced grief, but she had a genuine desire to help other people. After doing The Loss HIstory Graph she discovered she had 15 significant losses during her life. She turned out to have some of the biggest emotional breakthroughs of any of the 12 participants! And this was the person that started out thinking she didn’t have any losses. Thankfully she was open to a new experience!

Understanding Grief and Its Effects

I was 19 when I went to my first Grief Recovery Certification Training. I wasn’t sure why I was there other than my dad founded The Grief Recovery Institute. I ended up working on sexual abuse at the hands of an adult I trusted. I didn’t know it at the time, but I was grieving a loss of trust and a loss of safety. Using what I learned during that training didn’t shield me from a lifetime of losses, but it gave me tools to use when I experienced them. I have used The Method to work on my relationship with living family members, ex-boyfriends, moving, pet loss, and deaths. Because I do the work I am able to help others!

If there's one thing to take away from watching the video above, or reading this blog, it’s everyone has unresolved grief in their life (including you).

Everyone grieves.
