The Problem

Most mental health professionals have minimal training in the area of grief and loss.

And, almost every issue your client brings to the therapeutic relationship has a foundation in grief and loss.

Theory Without Action

You might understand grief intellectually — the models, the assessments, and the compartmentalized language. What you may lack is a concrete, step-by-step protocol that gives your clients exercises, actions and tools to process their grief and find hope.

Death-Focused Only

Your education most likely covered death and bereavement, but not the 40+ other types of loss your clients present with — divorce, estrangement, health, career, financial, trust, faith, and identity losses.

Is Talking Enough?

Talk therapy helps clients process emotions, but it doesn't offer them an integrated framework to experience emotional resolution. Clients often cycle through the same pain for years without a clear path to healing.

The Method

A structured, action-based program that gives people the tools to move beyond loss

You'll guide your clients through a proven process that turns emotional pain into lasting recovery — not just talking, but real action steps that create real change.

1

Grief Education

Become aware of the patterns you develop to deal with loss—including "myths," avoidant behaviors, and the pretense that you're "fine"—all of which keep you from healing.

2

Discover your Losses

Construct a Loss History Graph, a powerful visual map of every significant loss in your life, and discover the emotions you still carry with respect to your losses.

3

Learn the Actions

Guided by a Certified Grief Recovery Specialist, learn the specific actions needed to process and complete your relationship with the pain of loss.

4

Complete the Work

Release emotional pain by working through structured exercises, allowing you to express what you wish had been different or better, or never got a chance to say.

5

Live your life

Experience emotional completeness—a measurable shift from pain to hope, allowing you to open your heart once again.

How It’s Different

How does the Grief Recovery Method differ from traditional grief support?

  • There is a beginning and an end to this structured process which involves reading, writing, emotional insight, verbal expression, and non-judgmental affirmation.
  • The GRM process allows the individual to shift their lens with respect to “processing” (or not processing) their grief from their “story” to their “emotions.”
  • It reflects characteristics of Person-Centered, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Emotionally Focused approaches to supporting clients.
  • The structure of the GRM formats keeps the process intact, with little or no allowance for deflection on the part of the therapist or the griever, thus creating a sense of containment and safety for the client.
  • The Grief Recovery Method is an important tool for any mental health professional because it depathologizes the construct of “grief” and normalizes the client’s emotional, psychological and somatic responses to loss.
  • The Grief Recovery Method has been proven to be “Evidence Based” and effective by research done at Kent State University.

All trauma has a grief component. Not all grief has a trauma component.

How does The Grief Recovery Method differ from EMDR?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) helps with the neuro networks, while the Grief Recovery Method deals with what is incomplete on an emotional and psychological level. A number of mental health professionals who have taken the Grief Recovery Method Certification Training also use EMDR.

From mental health professionals

“I attended the Grief Recovery Training as both a widow and a therapist. My ‘tools’ only helped me to a point, but this method has taken me to a different place, a place of peace. Really looking forward to working with clients and helping them find their peace.”
“I am a Marriage and Family Therapist who has searched for a program that not only meets the griever with compassion but has a format that contains a series of steps and actions to help the griever get into their emotional self to move into a place of recovery. The Grief Recovery Method Training has exceeded my expectations.”
“The Grief Recovery Method has given me tools in enhancing my clinical knowledge and understanding to help others. My experience in this area shows how unresolved issues are a factor in mental illness and emotional stability. In moving forward, I believe grief recovery is the first step in confronting our fears in dealing with PTSD and losses. i.e. (death, divorce, careers, illness & health and aging).”
