About Dana

In early 2019, I experienced a sudden and drastic loss of health and mobility. After multiple visits to medical specialists and much time and money spent, my husband Richard Rubin and I were invited by a friend to attend an information seminar about The Grief Recovery Method. Our friend had gone through the GRM program herself and believed it would be helpful for me. The Grief Recovery Specialist facilitating the seminar, continually referred to the fact that unresolved grief doesn’t go away. No matter how busy you are or how much you try to ignore it, grief stays with you buried under the surface. This in turn can cause a myriad of physical symptoms. I had spent so much time and energy taking care of others over the years, I neglected myself and didn’t think that my grief would be enough of a stressor to cause such illnesses. It was my job to take care of others first and power through whatever stressors or losses came my way. That’s the way I was raised and lived my life. Believing I could “deal with it later” didn’t work out. My body didn’t want to wait any longer to deal with my grief. I was forced to stop working as my body made the decision for me. Nerve and muscle pain, difficulty with mobility, reduced eyesight, compromised depth-perception and reaction time, vertigo, loss of ability to safely drive more than a few blocks, confusion, fatigue, brain-fog, emotional ups and downs… the feeling of being helpless and hopeless. I was also recently remarried. How can I be present in a new marriage with a loving husband and a young daughter when it was a struggle just to get my malfunctioning body to walk across the room? It was a scary and difficult time. Attending the seminar made me realize and come to terms with what I had been ignoring and trying to run away from – I needed to attend to my own losses and grief. By attending therapy and participating in a Grief Recovery Support program, I was able to recover from my symptoms brought on by accumulated unresolved grief from childhood abuse, neglect, and the struggles from fleeing a long abusive first marriage and ugly divorce. Seeing how remarkable the Grief Recovery Method was at addressing loss & grief, my husband and I attended training to become Grief Recovery Method Specialists. Together we facilitate Grief Recovery Method Support Groups, and individually facilitate Grief Support One-on-One sessions in Claremont, CA and the surrounding areas. We also offer Grief Recovery Method Support programs via Zoom. I am a Licensed Psychiatric Technician who for over 20 years has held space in safety and care for clients experiencing crises and loss.

My Experience

The program has let me release a deep hurt. I had a very controlling and demanding mother and had convinced myself that she did not love me. Doing a relationship graph for my relationship with her really helped me to love her and also acknowledge and let go of the hurt I was carrying. This was all the more important because my wonderful husband, who did love me, dropped dead suddenly of a brain stem aneurysm in 2011 and I was feeling like I was all alone in the universe and so angry at my mother and it was just paralyzing. Now that I have worked through the program with Richard and Dana, I am at peace. I am doing great at work, I suddenly have a full social life, and I am in a healthy relationship. None of this would have been possible for me in the state I was in prior to doing the Grief Recovery program. I also appreciated learning how to listen to others compassionately.

My Experience

There was a set time period (8 weeks). There were specific steps to take that can be used for other or future losses. The facilitators were excellent. I now have other people (facilitators and other people in the group) to reach out to. The exercises seem to have mitigated the sense of loss I worked on.
