Death of a Friend or Loved One

Grieving the Death of Someone You Love

Whether you lost a friend, a sibling, a grandparent, or someone else close to you — the pain is real. And you do not need anyone's permission to grieve.

Your Grief Is Valid

You Don't Need Permission to Grieve

When someone you love dies, the world can feel like it has stopped.

Whether this death was sudden or expected, recent or years ago, the grief you feel is real.

You are not broken. You are grieving. And what you are feeling makes complete sense.

“The death of a loved one produces emotions that can be described as the feeling of reaching out for someone who has always been there, only to find that when we need them one more time, they are no longer there.”

“I found myself in this really dark place. All I could feel was like I was drowning in a sea of pain...”

— Ed Owens

Something To Consider

Signs Your Grief May Be Incomplete

You find yourself unable to talk about them without crying, even years later

You avoid certain places, songs, or traditions because the memories are too painful

You feel like nobody understands the depth of what you lost

You have been told to “move on” or “be strong” and it made things worse

You carry guilt about things left unsaid or undone

You feel disconnected from people who have not experienced this kind of loss

You wonder if the heaviness will ever lift

These are not signs that something is wrong with you. They are signs of unfinished emotional business — and there are specific actions that can help.

What You May Be Hearing

Well-Meaning Words That Actually Hurt

People around you want to help — but most were never taught what to say.

"Don't feel bad."

This tells you to suppress the most natural human response to loss.

"Be strong for your family."

This puts an impossible burden on a grieving person.

"Time heals all wounds."

Time alone heals nothing.

"They're in a better place."

This does nothing to address the pain of the person left behind.

"At least they're not suffering anymore."

One person's relief does not cancel another person's grief.

"I know exactly how you feel."

No two grief experiences are the same.

If you have heard any of these, it was not because people did not care. It was because they were never taught what to say. Neither were you. That is not a failure — it is a gap in what our culture teaches us about grief.

When You Are Ready

There Is a Path Through This

You may not be ready for this section yet. That is OK. Bookmark this page and come back when you are.

But when you are ready — when the weight of carrying this becomes heavier than the fear of facing it — there is an evidence-based grief recovery program backed by peer-reviewed research from Kent State University that was built for exactly this moment.

You do not have to live in pain to prove you loved someone.

“Pain doesn't equal love, love equals love.”

— Russell Friedman
