Why This Matters

Most people who want to help grievers were never given the right tools

Good Intentions Aren’t Enough

Wanting to help someone who is grieving is natural. But without the right framework, even the most caring people default to clichés that leave grievers feeling more alone.

Grief Is Bigger Than Death

Divorce, job loss, health changes, estrangement, pet loss, addiction — there are more than 40 types of loss, and most programs only address one.

You Experience It Yourself First

During certification, you work through one of your own losses using the method. You leave not only trained — but personally transformed.

The Method

A structured, action-based program that gives people the tools to move beyond loss

Guided by a certified specialist, you’ll work through a proven process that turns emotional pain into lasting recovery — not just talking, but real action steps that create real change.

1

Grief Education

Become aware of the patterns you develop to deal with loss—including "myths," avoidant behaviors, and the pretense that you're "fine"—all of which keep you from healing.

2

Discover your Losses

Construct a Loss History Graph, a powerful visual map of every significant loss in your life, and discover the emotions you still carry with respect to your losses.

3

Learn the Actions

Guided by a Certified Grief Recovery Specialist, learn the specific actions needed to process and complete your relationship with the pain of loss.

4

Complete the Work

Release emotional pain by working through structured exercises, allowing you to express what you wish had been different or better, or never got a chance to say.

5

Live your life

Experience emotional completeness—a measurable shift from pain to hope, allowing you to open your heart once again.

Attending this training was a life-changing event, for my personal life and to help others.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a degree or license?
No. Our training is open to anyone — no degree, license, or prior experience required. Many of our most effective specialists are people who experienced loss themselves and want to help others.
What does the training look like?
It's a 4-day live training (32 hours), either on Zoom or in-person at select locations. You'll work through the method yourself, learn to facilitate all 5 program formats, and leave fully certified. Class size is capped at 20 for a personal experience.
What can I do after certification?
You'll be qualified to run Support Groups (8 sessions), One-on-One programs (7 sessions), Pet Loss programs (6 sessions), Helping Children with Loss (for adult caretakers, 4 sessions), and Alumni programs (4 sessions). Many Specialists integrate these programs into existing practices; others develop new practices.
Is the online training the same as in-person?
The Foundational and Advanced content is identical whether taken online or in-person. The Premium In-Person option adds small-group coaching, live roleplay practice, and is taught directly by Cole James and Sandi Derby.
How much does it cost?
Foundational: from $832/mo for 3 months (or $2,495 today). Advanced — most popular: from $1,332/mo for 3 months (or $3,995 today). Premium In-Person: from $1,665/mo for 3 months (or $4,995 today). 0% interest 3-month payment plans via Stripe. Many employers, churches, and VA programs will cover the cost.
What support do I get after certification?
One full year of unlimited support — email, phone, and Zoom with experienced trainers. Plus access to the Specialist Resource Community with 15,000+ peers for collaboration, referrals, and ongoing learning.
What do we mean by "recovery"?
Recovery means feeling better. Recovery means claiming your circumstances instead of your circumstances claiming you and your happiness. Recovery is finding new meaning for living, without the fear of being hurt again. Recovery is being able to enjoy fond memories without them precipitating painful feelings of regret or remorse. Recovery is acknowledging that it is perfectly alright to feel sad from time to time and to talk about those feelings no matter how those around you react. Recovery is being able to forgive others when they say or do things that you know are based on their lack of knowledge about grief. Recovery is one day realizing that your ability to talk about the loss you've experienced is indeed normal and healthy.
