How Your Grief Recovery Became My Life’s Mission
Your healing from the painful experience of grief is why I’m here. I am passionate about helping you reclaim a life of joy and fulfillment whether your loss has been from the death of a loved one, the end of a relationship, a professional loss or any of 40 different types of loss and change that result in grief. I know I can help you because of my own recovery from the significant losses in my life. I have not only survived but have learned to fully embrace life again after the loss of three of my five children – baby Shane, Nicole and Ryan - all at different ages and under vastly different circumstances. In spite of these crushing, life-altering losses and the subsequent end of a difficult 27-year marriage, with acceptance, willingness and forgiveness, I learned to re-engage life and embrace the joy that is still here for all of us. When I asked myself “what is all this life experience for?” I knew the answer was to help others.
My formal education includes a BA in Organizational Studies with a minor in Human Development, which included classes on death and dying and counseling strategies. My professional career has involved mentoring and training individuals in the corporate world, fundraising and managing volunteer teams as a non-profit professional and organizational management in small to medium size businesses. The sweet spot of my work has always been focusing on human potential, whether in supporting the work of others or helping individuals find success and satisfaction in their professional roles. My work as an Advanced Grief Recovery Method Specialist is a natural extension of this focus.
Helping Others Through Grief
Because of my personal success in recovering from child loss, I have worked with many parents who have also experienced the devastation of losing a child. It has been such a joy to watch as parents realize that they need not resign themselves to a life of desperate sadness. Whether it's a child or another loss that is challenging your heart and limiting your life, I know this is possible for you too, regardless of what has turned your life upside down. I became an Advanced Grief Recovery Method Specialist because years ago on my personal healing journey through multiple losses, I experienced the effectiveness of the concepts on which the Grief Recovery Method is based; emotional honesty and personal responsibility for recovery. When I was introduced to the Grief Recovery Method, I was able to uncover deeply buried emotions and truly heal from the last of my three losses, the suicide of my youngest son. Through its progression of effective, action-oriented steps, taught with compassion, attentiveness and uplifting support, I will help you learn the often-misunderstood concepts about grief, the power you have to heal your most painful experiences and the tools you can use for life.
One of the most important programs I teach is Helping Children With Loss. This 4-week class is designed to help parents, teachers and others who have children in their care, learn important misperceptions about grief - the many circumstances considered grief events, how we have been conditioned to avoid looking at all its causes and effects, and to become skilled at drawing children out, listening with support and empathy rather than minimizing or dismissing their emotions. Please check back for the date of the next class. The 4-week program is meant to be completed as a unit and therefore there are no drop-ins. It is a commitment to the well-being of the children in your care - an invaluable gift to them that will last a lifetime.
I consider it an honor and privilege to help you move beyond your grief event, re-framing the pain of loss so you can live fully in your present life, free of your most painful attachments to the past.

I did not come grieving, instead, my employer required the training. I was plesantly surprised that so much of the book and trainings gave me so much insight into parenting. Also, I was able to write a letter to my grandma, and that has helped heal me. I truly loved the program!Helping Children With Loss02/04/2022
This program overall helped me understand that there are different types of losses besides death. Children struggle with losses that majority of the time we don't see as a loss.Helping Children With Loss02/04/2022
The program was eye-opening, helping me to see how I learned to hide my feelings, which I passed on to my children. Marla helped me to see the accumulative grief in my own life that I plan to work on so that I can help my children and grandchildren and thus stop this cycle.Helping Children With Loss11/28/2021
Outstanding! Marla was the best! She pulled some information out of me that I did not know it was there.One-on-One Support09/17/2021
It is a discovery method and I truly did discover things about myself and my daughters death that has helped me to bring closure.One-on-One Online Support06/20/2021
During my 30+ years of personal growth work, I have addressed many aspects of the various losses in my life. However, the format of the Grief Recovery Program allowed me to look at the overall picture in a manner I hadn't done previously, as well as enabling me to focus on specific traumas and losses in a more comprehensive way. In my experience, it is rare to have the opportunity to be fully heard while sharing painful experiences. Having Marla be "a heart with ears" was a great gift. The program resulted in a greater sense of completion with my father and to paint a more comprehensive picture of the whole relationship vs. thinking of it in parts. My father died more than 20 years ago and I have done a lot of work on that relationship in the intervening years, yet there was more to do and the Grief Recovery Program gave me the time and space to do it. Marla's personal experience, empathic nature, knowledge of the program and willingness to listen contributed greatly to the comfort and trust I experienced as well as the value gained.One-on-One Support03/21/2021
