Back to School: When Change Feels Like Loss

Back to School Loss Grief Child Kids Friends Classroom Teacher Connection Season Reassurance Support

Back to school is often shared as a happy milestone. New shoes, packed lunches, and smiling photos mark the day. But for both you and your child, this season can also stir up feelings of grief that don’t always get talked about.

From Your Child’s Perspective

For many kids, the most challenging part of going back to school is being away from their loved ones. They may miss the comfort of home, the freedom of summer, or the closeness of being by your side each day. Even if they are excited to see friends, it can still feel scary to walk into a new classroom or spend hours away from the people they love most.

That grief may not come out in words. Instead, it can show up in tears at drop off, clinginess, upset stomachs, or even acting out. Underneath those behaviors is a simple truth: your child doesn’t want to be apart from you.

From Your Perspective

As a parent, you may feel a tug at your own heart, too. You might miss the slower mornings, the sound of laughter at home, or just knowing your child is close by. You are proud to watch your child grow and step into new experiences, but you may also grieve how quickly the years are passing.

Why It Matters

Grief is a normal response to change. When you and your child acknowledge what feels hard, you remove the shame that often surrounds those emotions. Saying out loud, “I miss you too,” or “It’s hard for me as well,” creates connection and reassures your child that their feelings are valid.

Helping Each Other Through

  • Let your child share their feelings without rushing to fix them.
  • Create small rituals such as a note in their lunchbox, a hug that lasts a little longer, or a special after-school routine.
  • Be gentle with yourself. Notice your own emotions and allow space to grieve the changes, too.
  • Remember, you don’t need to walk through this season alone. Support is available, and talking about your grief helps lighten the load.

A Final Word to You

Back to school is more than a schedule change. It is a season of letting go and beginning again, and with that comes both excitement and grief. By honoring those feelings, both theirs and yours, you create room for healing and a closer relationship as you move forward together.
