I have experienced trauma and losses of many kinds, but the most life-shattering experience was losing my 23-year-old son, Ben, in 2016 to an accidental overdose -- a casualty of the opioid epidemic. Losing a child in an unexpected and tragic manner, to a highly stigmatized death, creates complicated grief. I have participated in a number of different grief support groups (both professionally-facilitated and peer-led) to help process this immeasurable loss; each helped a little in some way.
