My name is DiEsha Carter, founder of The Unshakable Spiritual Life (TUSL), and my purpose is simple: to be a rest stop on your grief journey.

So many women are suddenly thrust into a season of life they never saw coming — disoriented, overwhelmed, and desperate for someone who understands. I help grievers navigate their way through the painful unknown, not with platitudes, but with proven tools and the kind of compassion that only comes from having walked the road yourself.

My path to the Grief Recovery Institute began with my own loss — the death of my husband. Like many grievers, I tried to push through, hold it together, and move on. It didn't work. I found myself emotionally paralyzed, crushed under the weight of my pain and a new reality I hadn't asked for. But it was in that dark, unavoidable place that something shifted in me. I began to see clearly what we do as people — how we perform "okay," how pretense overshadows pain, and how unacknowledged heartache quietly becomes a barrier to healing. I couldn't pretend anymore. And I often say that my grief journey didn't begin when my husband died — it began the day I decided to actually grieve.

Making it to the other side whole required my relationship with God, but it also required the right tools. I pursued certification through the Grief Recovery Institute because I knew I was called to help others, and I wanted to do it well. On my very first day of training, I heard two definitions from the Grief Recovery Handbook that stopped me in my tracks: "Grief is the normal and natural reaction to loss or change of any kind" and "Grief is the conflicting feelings caused by the end of or change in a familiar pattern of behavior." In that moment, I knew without a doubt I was exactly where I was supposed to be.

My own grief has not been limited to widowhood. I have personally navigated childhood trauma, abandonment, adultery, job loss, the loss of relationships with the living, loss of identity and dreams, broken trust in church leadership, and multiple family losses within a devastating span of time. I share this not for sympathy, but so you know — I am not speaking to you from a textbook. I am speaking to you from experience.

Regardless of your religious background or affiliation, a broken heart is a broken heart. Grief is universal, and so is the need to heal. At TUSL, I walk alongside women in every kind of loss — not just the loss of a person, but the loss of a marriage, a dream, an identity, a sense of safety, or a season of life you loved.
