Rex, was professional, caring and supportive. He shared his journey to help me understand and deal with my loss. When I was "stuck," he gently guided me with examples and methods from the book that helped me clarify and verbalize my loss to help my recovery. It was apparent that he was totally committed to the Grief Recovery model. I am grateful to him and CAPS for providing this life changing program. I certainly hope that it is made available to those who could benefit to improve their lives and relationships.

I have never met an individual who has such drive for helping others. His understanding and empathy has filled an empty spot in my heart that has felt so alone for so many years… and for that, I am forever thankful.

Rex was the best. He always made sure we were only sharing what we were comfortable sharing and he always made sure we understood our assignment for the following week.

I enjoyed having the steps modeled first before I was expected to complete them. It was helpful to see the facilitator show the emotions of loss. It was comforting to feel the pain and be able to talk about feelings.

The emotions associated with loss are messy, and there was a time when I would have described them as hopelessly so. Not anymore. GRM has helped me actually articulate the exact nature of my loss and the nuances surrounding it, once translated into the recovery components (SES, forgives, apologies). GRM is an incredible tool for finding completion after a loss, in a systematic but humanistic way.

The program ('it') helped me look at grief in a completely different way (vs only a death). The "never ask for forgiveness" was another concept that I now look at in a completely different/better way ("make an apology instead"). It helped me remember things and those things were ones that gave be a more balanced view of the other person. It led me to a place where I could see my role in the situation with clarity - and to accept the Grace available to me so that I could heal more and judge less. It also taught me new/better ways of communication with others and strengthened my empathy for myself; showing me that I also needed to forgive and love myself as well at the other. Understanding my STERBs not looking at them as faults but rather as something I can change if I really want to (these STERBs do not control me, they work but only short term which is not good enough for me, and so if I really want what I say I want I can work towards lessening the hold they have on me (one little step at a time). Another big step was validation of the truth that we are the architects of our own discomfort (something I knew but didn't understand the degree in which it actually is a broader truth vs. a hunch, and that I have more control over changing it than I had been willing to acknowledge). I learned that if you discount it you have given yourself the okay to be a victim vs. the author of your healing. Learning the difference between Guilt and wishing things could have been Different, Better, or More (and recognizing them as tools to help bring visibility to what is incomplete). And it's very interesting that this attitude of responsibility for our own feelings and actions starts with very early "influence learning". It's a way to get stuck, not a way to release what chokes us. The program opened my eyes to Cumulative Loss and the effects on my health and happiness. It is a great reminder to share positive thoughts and feelings as they occur vs. waiting until it is too late. And lastly release the need to fix yourself and others - be willing to go through the process and allow others to do the same (we are all unique).

This program combined other therapy aspects I've used in the past & I learned a new way to view grief. My grief event surfaces every so often. The program was instructional but it didn't give me immediate relief. I'm hopeful that using this program will make a difference the next time I revisit this loss/grief. My specialist, Rex Cearley, did a wonderful job presenting the programs & helping me through the steps. He is a wonderful, caring, insightful man.
